NAEDA Supports Renewal of CUSMA Agreement to Strengthen North American Agricultural Trade

Calgary, AB – November 5, 2025 – The North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA) has submitted formal comments to Global Affairs Canada as part of the Government of Canada’s public consultation process ahead of the joint review of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

Representing approximately 4,500 farm, industrial, and outdoor power equipment dealers across North America, including more than 400 dealer locations in Canada, NAEDA emphasizes the importance of maintaining and renewing CUSMA to ensure stability, competitiveness, and growth in the integrated North American agricultural equipment market.

“Our members play a vital role in supporting Canada’s agri-food producers and rural communities,” said NAEDA CEO, Brett Davis. “CUSMA has been instrumental in creating a predictable, tariff-free environment that benefits farmers, manufacturers, and dealers across all three countries. Renewing and preserving this agreement as written is essential to maintaining that success.”

CUSMA’s Proven Success

Since its implementation, CUSMA has strengthened economic cooperation between Canada, the United States, and Mexico, supporting seamless trade in agricultural equipment and products through harmonized regulations and zero-tariff barriers. This has led to cost savings, increased efficiencies, and greater competitiveness for farmers and equipment dealers throughout the region.

NAEDA highlights that Canada is a net importer of agricultural equipment, and that maintaining free cross-border movement of machinery and parts is vital for Canada’s food security and agricultural productivity. Many of the leading agricultural equipment brands, including John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Claas, and Kubota, manufacture a significant portion of their products in the United States for use in Canada.

Call to Address Section 232 Tariffs

In its submission, NAEDA also urges the Canadian government to pursue the rollback of Section 232 tariffs, which have negatively impacted cross-border sales and service of agricultural equipment. These tariffs have disrupted the long-standing integration of the North American equipment market and hindered business operations for Canadian dealers and American farmers alike.

Looking Ahead

NAEDA’s comments underscore the economic stability, predictability, and growth that CUSMA has delivered to the agricultural sector. The association stresses that renewal of the agreement without major changes is essential to ensuring continued investment, job creation, and prosperity across North America.

“CUSMA’s success story is one of collaboration and shared prosperity,” added Brett. “Its renewal will secure the foundation for continued growth and competitiveness in North America’s agri-food and equipment industries.”
